January 29, 2009 / Oakland, CA – Upon completion of extensive renovations to restore the historic FOX Oakland Theater to its treasured state, the resplendent and historic downtown entertainment and cultural venue opens its doors on Thursday, Feb. 5.

**Prior to the ribbon cutting ceremony, working media will be allowed to participate in a press tour of the building. Interested media must RSVP to for the media tour that begins at 5:00 p.m.

Opening festivities begin with a ribbon cutting ceremony at 6:00 p.m. Participants include: Oakland Mayor Ronald V. Dellums; State Attorney General Jerry Brown; Janet Lamkin, California Market President Bank of America; Claudia Robinson, Senior Vice President Community Development Banking, Bank of America; Patricia Dedekian, President, Friends of the Oakland Fox; Phil Tagami, Managing General Partner, California Capital Group and; Gregg Perloff, President, Another Planet Entertainment.

Following the ribbon cutting ceremony, the gala will begin at 7:00 p.m., cocktail attire. Dance to the music of Trombone Shorty and Orleans Avenue and Don Neely’s Royal Society Jazz Orchestra. Special entertainment provided by: The Oakland School for the Arts Jazz Ensemble, The Oaktown Vaudeville Revue, The Decobelles, soprano Sophia Chew, fire dancers, stilt walkers and others.

Gala tickets are $250 each. Enjoy buffet dining, California wines and martini bar. Valet parking is available for $10 or FREE parking is available at the Rotunda Garage, enter on 17th Street, between Telegraph and San Pablo.

ABOUT THE FOX THEATER

When it opened in 1928, the Fox Oakland Theater was widely regarded as one of the finest theaters on the West Coast. Originally a 3200 seat movie theater and vaudeville house, it later served as a live performance venue. In its day, the Fox was the jewel of the Uptown, but like most inner city theaters across America it ultimately fell victim to the times, and closed its doors in 1966, operated briefly under a number of independent operators and closed for good in 1973.

The re-opening of the Fox Theater in 2009 as a live performance venue and new home for the Oakland School for the Arts is the culmination of a 10 year effort by the City‘s Redevelopment Agency to restore life to this historic building and to the Uptown District.

The strategy to renovate the Fox began back in 1996 when the City’s Redevelopment Agency purchased the theater from the Delucchi family. Badly deteriorated from years of neglect, the theater was a blighting influence on the entire neighborhood, attracting vandals, the homeless and endless opportunities for graffiti. Its very presence discouraged new investment in the neighborhood.

In order to turn the situation around, the Redevelopment Agency, with the support of the newly formed Friends of the Oakland Fox (FOOF), began a series of small projects in 1999 thru 2001 including: replacing the roof, relocating the few tenants that occupied the building, and restoring the marquee to demonstrate that something good was soon coming.

In 2000, the Redevelopment Agency completed a Master Plan that outlined a number of development options for the theater. The options all contemplated a performing arts theater but varied in size and cost.

In the winter of 2002, the Redevelopment Agency, acting as the developer, selected a consultant team headed by Phil Tagami of California Capital Group (CCG) to develop the theater and school. The CCG concept caught the attention of then Mayor of Oakland, Jerry Brown. Mayor Brown suggested that the theater complex could be the new home for the Oakland School for the Arts, a performing arts charter school located downtown and desperately looking for space to expand. His interest in the Fox was a catalyst that provided a rallying point for those interested in restoring the theater and its surrounding wrap-around structure.

The Redevelopment Agency and Bank of America with CCG and their consultants designed a financial and ownership structure that allowed the project to attract over $20 million in tax credits. The team also worked closely with the City’s Redevelopment Agency to secure over $50 million for the project. An additional $7 million was received from state and federal grants. Friends of the Oakland Fox (FOOF) began the complex process of securing funds from myriad community donors.

In December 2006 Turner Construction, along with over 50 subcontractors and many local Oakland firms, began construction on the theater and school. Newly installed mechanical, electrical, plumbing and seismic systems combined the latest building technology with historic preservation. As of 2009, the completed project is the largest of its kind in the country.

The re-opening of the Fox Oakland Theater as a live music venue and home for Oakland School for the Arts is testament to the hard work and dedication of the people of Oakland, and will be a great source of pride for years to come. The Fox Oakland, along with the historic Paramount Theatre, will combine to anchor Oakland’s emerging arts and entertainment district, already evident in the housing, restaurants and clubs opening in the Uptown District.

The building is being dedicated to the men and women who restored it with care. Each of their names is located inside the building.

ABOUT ANOTHER PLANET ENTERTAINMENT
Another Planet Entertainment, LLC (Another Planet) was created on July 18, 2003 when Gregg W. Perloff, President/CEO of Bill Graham Presents, left to build his own company. Shortly thereafter he was joined by longtime colleagues at Bill Graham Presents Sherry Wasserman, former Senior VP and Head of Concert Production at BGP, and Steve Welkom, former Senior VP of Administration and Business Development for BGP.

In its first year of operation, Another Planet Entertainment was honored to be selected by a vote of its concert industry peers as “Promoter of the Year” in the United States by Pollstar Magazine. In 2004 and 2005, Another Planet was pleased to be named “Independent Promoter of the Year.”

Within the past two years, Another Planet has successfully produced two major festivals in San Francisco – Outside Lands Music & Arts Festival in Golden Gate Park in 2008 and Treasure Island Music Festival on Treasure Island in both 2007 and 2008.

Launch of Event City Creative Blog and Zine Good morning East Coast, happy dreaming West Coast! I welcome you to the Event City Network’s™ magazine blog. The first of it’s kind to be presented within the United States and as far as we know, within the entire Global Internet! I present to you on this First day of June 2007, our first Blog of hopefully many more to come, for the Event City Network’s™ online publication, EVENT CITY CREATIVE™. What is the Event City Creative™ and what type of publication will it be? It is an online “Mag and Zine” for the Events & Creative Industries™ soon to be in Beta Test. The Event City Network™ is the new Online Service Portal for these industries and all their vertical markets.

I’m still waiting to see how well ya all can write!!  I know you are very capable of speaking a bunch of good stuff, but how’s your writing skills Bub? I am very impressed that you can actually find your way to your special Blog.  So I hope you can find it in you to add a line of three to keep me posted on your happenings while we are in these busy times.  Why don’t you talk about that crazy industry you are all in – what do they call those things that falicker — oops, I meant “flicker” on the screen??  You know, you play a ROLL in making it all come down the pipe!?? 
Yes MOVIES!  That’s what they are called. So why don’t you put your pen to the test and start journalizing your experiences on that?
In the mean time, do keep your eyes and mouse pointed to our space at the Event City Creative Magazine where your comments are always welcomed and your ideas greatly appreciated. I look forward to hearing from you often and soon.  Did you get my message about any of our upcoming treks to the big Diamond in the Desert (What I call Las Vegas – long story about that one)?  This will be your chance to meet and greet the one and only….
OK, I’ll give you a couple of hints – It’s a Photo-imagers Disneyland come the end of the month. Then sometime soon after you will be Hospitalitized and crazyfied at one of the Event City Industries biggest and most illustrious Tradeshows ever! And finally – It’s Our party and we’ll cry if we want too, but just don’t miss all the great Halloween and Event industry products at this outrageous tradeshow. Industry insiders and surely many outsiders say of all tradeshows for all industries you will not have nearly as much fun as you will have at this upcoming show in March 2008!
